FAQ

Yes, real questions, not just filler

1. What makes this an “Anti-Handbook”?

Because it’s not another “10 drills to master guard retention” manual. This book dismantles the myths. It explains how jiu-jitsu actually works through the lens of ecological dynamics without the academic jargon or tribal nonsense. You’ll finally understand why good practice feels good and why bad practice wastes your time.

2. Why should I care about ecological dynamics?

Because it’s the science behind how real skill emerges, not through rote reps or memorizing 500 techniques, but through interaction, adaptation, and intentional chaos. It’s how elite players actually learn (even if they don’t know the theory). This book makes it make sense in plain English.

3. Isn’t the whole ecological debate kind of toxic online right now?

Exactly. That’s why this book exists. Instead of picking sides, I translate the core ideas so you can stop arguing and start training better. You don’t need a PhD or a YouTube feud, you just need a framework that works on the mats.

4. Who is this for, really?

For thinking grapplers. The ones who feel there’s something missing between what they’re told to do and what actually works. Whether you’re a blue belt trying to train smarter or a coach tired of parroting dogma, this book will make your whole approach click. (Then you can smile quietly while everyone else argues online.)

About the Author

Ryan is just a regular guy who loves Jiu Jitsu, teaching, and asking too many questions about how people actually learn.

After years of stagnating progress and injuries on the mats, he discovered the world of ecological dynamics and never looked back. Working in education, from teaching middle schoolers to building special ed curriculum, was really what pushed him to think about pedagogy.

What started as curiosity became obsession. Between injuries and free time, Ryan dove into research, podcasts, white papers, and hours of Greg Souders interviews, not to become a guru, but to understand how Jiu Jitsu can be learned and taught in a way that actually makes sense.

He wrote this book for people like him: curious students, thoughtful coaches, and anyone ready to stop memorizing and start learning.
